Non-grocery lists

I saw in the App Store that grocery gadgets can be used for many kinds of lists, not just shopping. It would be hugely helpful if the sample lists had a few sample items to show how to set up a non-shopping or non-grocery list. I am transferring all my lists from Handyshopper over and am not sure how to create a list that stays separate. I currently have lists for vacation packing, Christmas gifts, Christmas ornament collections, books to read, and cleaning schedules. Once I add all those items, the master list is going to be a jumbled mess. In handyshopper, for my vacation packing, I had the following "stores"-todo before leaving, groceries to buy, things to pack. Then, for categories, I had Beach, Dog, Car, Food, Health, Home, Menus, Misc. It wasn't perfectly arranged, mind you, but it got us to the beach with everything we needed. Under before leaving, I could then look at my to do list for Dog, Home, Car etc. and work on things by category. I'm assuming that non-shopping lists would use "store" and category as a method of sorting. How would you recommend setting these up? Are there any samples to download?

    Hi Melissa. The master list is set up to be inclusive of everything you would ever use or need.  I can see your point of the master list being a jumbled mess if you want to add things such as beach trip items, gifts, etc.  The idea of each list is to create the list and keep those items in the list.  When you go to the beach, you probably take the same items, or mostly the same items every time.  So you keep the list, and mark "shopping done" when you have packed everything you need in your car.  The items in the list do not go away, they are simply reset back to zero.  Gifts might be a little more tricky, though, because you only purchase them once, and will more than likely never purchase them again.  That I really don't have a suggestion for, except completely delete them from your lists when you are done shopping, or the holiday is over.

    Thanks Moira, I'm kind of getting the hang of things.  I just set up a new list called Beach and went to add "turn up A/C" to a category that I want to call "Home".  I added the item to the list and then long tapped to edit the category and all the grocery categories are showing.  I realize I can add new categories, but my category list already has 20 pre-added.  I will be adding 9 categories for my beach list.  Another 6 for my Christmas gifts, another 3 for my ornament collection, and all the other lists that I haven't even imagined.  If I delete a category from within any list, it deletes it for all lists.  I can foresee myself having over a 100 categories.  Is this to be expected?  Am I doing something wrong?

    Moira, thats the exact workaround I was thinking about!  Maybe even a keyboard character to start each category list so that it doesn't interfere with alphabetizing.  I haven't tried it yet, but hopefully it works.  Thanks so much for taking time to respond.

    Yeah, there are lot's of other "to do" type apps that allow you to keep separate lists and check off items as they are done and then recall and reset the list later. Those might be more appropriate for the types of things you want to track that aren't grocery- or store-related. I use "Priorities" which supports multiple check-off lists, templates, wireless syncing to multiple devices, email/share lists, ability to set priorites, due dates, alerts, repeating tasks, notes, etc.

    I would also like to use grocery gadget as my go app for shopping lists but am currently at a stand still. I want to be able to put a list in for the hardware store but most of these would be one time/in-frequent purchases. These work arounds are a little too awkward for my taste and if my wife had to scroll through "4 4x8 plywood panels" every time she was making the weekly list that would be the end of my access to the grocery list.

    Please add the ability to "Create New List, Non-Master list" or create a Master Grocery List and a Master List - Other.

    I use GG for some non-grocery things just fine. I have a check list of things to take with me in my RV. That's just a separate list; the items have no category and don't appear on any other list except the master, which I never have to look at. For the one-off gift or hardware item I'm going to get a the grocery store, I have a generic "gift item" and "hardware thing". That's the only reminder I need to get it. If it's more complicated than that, I use a piece of paper!

    How about an easier fix. Set it up so we can log into different Groups…those groups can hold different styles of "stores", including task lists as some request above.
